Authenticity Is Not Circumstancial
When you look at the best version of yourself, the masterpiece version of yourself, what does authenticity mean to you? When I look at myself and try and understand what it means to be authentic I think it looks like this: authenticity is being real despite the situation. No matter what is stacked up against me, I am going to be real and authentic no matter what. In public speaking, it’s hard to find others in this industry that are real because we are so public that a lot of people say one thing and live a different kind of life.
Lots of people will hold on to their insecurities and keep them from the world. I think that in order to live an authentic life you have to be real about your insecurities. You have to be real about the downfalls in your life. You have to be real about your short-comings and most importantly- you have to live above them. You own them, they don’t own you.
So many people in this day and age are afraid to stand up for what they believe in because of the fear that others won’t stand with them. Ask yourself this question - will you stand authentically for what you believe in even when that means you’ll be standing alone? Would you stand up for what’s right in your life even if it looks wrong to everyone else? Would you stand up for what you know to be right even if that means you’ll be crucified? A lot of people say that they believe in something until it becomes inconvenient to believe in it. Which type of person are you? Authenticity is not Circumstantial, it’s a state of being. It’s who you are no matter what. Period. End of story.
When you are climbing your ladder to success, are you the kind of person that will forget about the people that held your ladder in the beginning? Success changes people. I see it all the time. I am guilty of it too. I remember in the NFL, I thought that I would be different. I told myself that I wouldn’t be like those other people that hit that success and changed. And then I got that first paycheck, and no surprise- I changed. I forgot about the people that helped me to get to where I was. I wasn’t authentic then. See, my circumstance changed and because I wasn’t authentic, I changed too. What areas of your life are you becoming less authentic? When you lean into who you are, then no matter what happens in your life you will be unchanging at your core.
It all starts with you.
