It's Time to Change
When I realized I had to change everything, it all came down to one main change: I had to start choosing better and stop settling. I think the problem that a lot of us run into when we "decide" to change things is that we overwhelm ourselves with a crazy long list of things to change. We start to think about "being better" as this impossibly high goal that we put too far up. We think I have got to change this and this and this instead of finding one thing to focus on and work with.
I don't know how many of you have played sports, but I've played sports for my whole life so I've had plenty of injuries over the years. I remember one time when I was playing in the NFL I had some really bad knee pain. Like it was miserable just walking on this knee. Then during the same small amount of time, my ankle started hurting like crazy. I remember thinking how bad of shape I was in because now I had two things to worry about. I was very stressed that this could affect the entire season. After I talked with a couple of professionals about it I realized what was really going on was that I had tendonitis. The only thing I had to worry about was rolling out my quad muscles because my IT band was tight. I realized something after that incident. I realized that small changes can trickle down and affect so many different parts of your life. It was just one change that I made to my leg and all of my other injuries went away. A minor adjustment can create major change in our lives.
I want you guys to think about this for a minute: What is one small change that you can make in your life that will create residual changes in your life? Maybe that looks like changing your mindset. That could affect you in all of these other areas in your day to day. Sometimes we think we need to change who we are in all of the different places in our lives. We think we need to change who we are at work. We need to change who we are at home and who we are with our friends, but a lot of times it is just a small shift. Sometimes we just need to change what we are allowing ourselves to settle for. Sometimes we just need to change who we are allowing ourselves to be around day to day.
The point of all of this is this: Realize that change not only starts small, but usually it's just a small change that was needed all along to change everything else that has been bothering you and putting you down. So stop overthinking and overwhelming yourself with a thousand things to change and focus on the small mindset changes that can make a big difference.
It all starts with you.
