Perfection Is Prison
What are some things that you think you need to quit to make your life better? There is one thing I can think of that stands out above the rest for me right now. We need to quit trying to be perfect all of the time. Now, when I say that I do not mean that you should not strive to be the best version of yourself that you can possibly be. I don't mean that you shouldn't work hard, or that you shouldn't work towards being better than yourself in the past. It is this notion that we can eventually be perfect that keeps us obsessed in all of the wrong ways. Eating right is good and healthy, but it becomes unhealthy when it is tied to an obsession with being perfect because perfection isn't real. Perfection is a prison that we put ourselves in because we constantly redefine what it means to be perfect.
In our lives we constantly chase the next thing. The way this translates to perfection chasing is what we want to be perfect. Maybe we have decided that a certain weight is perfect for us, then we hit that weight and we feel like something is still wrong so we lower the weight, or we start to identify something else that is wrong or imperfect and we target that. If we live in this unhealthy obsession mindset then we will whittle away at ourselves until there is nothing left. It is so important to remember that perfection is subjective and temporary. There will always be someone smarter, faster, taller, higher scoring, or smoother than you. If you can't help but chase perfection then you will always be unhappy because perfection is sort of like the end of the rainbow that you will never get to. It is an illusion that we create for ourselves and we get mad at ourselves when we don't get there even though getting there would be truly impossible.
If you want to grow and be the best version of yourself that you can be in your life then you have to give up the obsession with perfection. The obsession with perfection will only keep you farther away from being the best version of yourself, because chasing perfection will lead to an absolute obsession with yourself. You should not be focussed on yourself twenty-four seven. If you want to be the best version of yourself then you have to take care of yourself sometimes and also find time for the other people in your life.
The best version of yourself is not obsessed with being perfect or beating everyone else at anything in particular. The best version of yourself is not in constant competition with everyone around you. So stop chasing perfection and start working on being the best version of yourself that you possibly can be.
