You know, I sort of make a habit to not go out to the gym until March every new year. I don’t like going there during January or February. I wait until March because that is when all of the people who are interested in being better leave. You see there is a big difference between the people who are just interested in being better and the people who are truly committed to getting better. The thing about people who are just interested in being better is that they will come into the gym at the beginning of the year and they will think, “Man, I am just going to wait and see what is going to happen.” Do you think that Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, or Lebran James ever go into the gym and just wait to see what happens? No. They come in with a plan. They develop a goal that they decide is worth it to them and then they commit. The thing about commitment is that they will not stop until they achieve those goals that they set for themselves to achieve. If they fail the first time, they try again and keep trying and trying until they hit it right on target.
When you are committed to something then you do not care what inconvenience shows up, you do not care what obstacle shows up, you do not care about anything standing in the way of you and your goals because you are going to push through whatever it is that is stopping you from achieving them no matter what. No matter how long it takes. No matter how many tries it takes. If you have to do the same thing over and over and over again until you get it right then that is what you are going to do, because that is what commitment is all about. It is about pushing yourself through when things get tough.
Let me tell you something. The thing about the people who come in waiting to see what will happen stop when they feel enough resistance. Maybe not immediately, but if you are waiting to see then there is some point that you will call it quits. For people who are committed, the only acceptable time to quit is when you hit your goal. That is the only time you get to stop, when you do what you have set out to do.
2020 was a very rough year for so many people, but for the people that made it to the other side okay then we are better for it. Let me tell you something, there will be more years that are confusing and hard. 2020 was not alone in being difficult for people. When these hard years come along then the only way you will make it to the other side stronger is if you stay committed to being the best version of yourself and you keep reminding yourself of your goals and your why. So find your goals, find your why, and get after whatever it is that you want to do.
It all starts with you.
