Stop Depending On Motivation
Application creates transformation. Motivation comes and goes. We’ve all seen it. It shows up and inspires you to work out once or twice and then you settle back into your old routine. Motivation shows up and you change your dynamic with your spouse for a day or two and then you settle back into the same routine. I get it. I’ve been there, but something has to change. Stop relying on motivation and start applying real changes to your life. Here are four tools that I use.
- Remember who you are
This has been a hard couple of years for everyone. It’s easy to forget who you have been before things got so confusing but you have to take the time and make the effort to remember who you are. Remember your passions and your drive, remember your confidence and your disposition. Don’t let the world tell you what you are and are not, you decide. Don’t lose sight of who you are.
- Create a legendary formula (clarity, connection, consistency)
This one is a bit more in depth so I am going to lay out the “3 C’s” for you. If you want to be legendary then you need to create a legendary routine. It’s not going to look like my routine or anyone else’s, this is just for you. What you need to get started is 1. Clarity. Get clarity on what it is you are going after. When my time with the NFL came to an end I made a promise to myself that I wanted to help other people reach their goals. I got clarity on where I wanted to take my life. 2. Connection. I know I say this all the time - connection is power. Think about a plug in an outlet and find what gives you power. For some people that is social interaction, some people it’s time in nature or mediation. This is up to you to decide. 3. Consistency. I hear all the time from people “Trent, I’m not consistent.” This is a lie, you are consistent. Maybe you aren’t consistent in the ways you want to be. Maybe you are consistent at laziness, or over sleeping. Maybe you’re consistent with anger or talking down to yourself. These aren’t good things to be consistent in but at least you know that you can be consistent. Okay, so start there! If you find that you are constantly talking badly about yourself, pay attention to that and consistently correct that behavior when it comes up. Some people use the consistency of prayer, mediation, working out, deeper conversations, practice on an instrument or something along this nature. Create consistency in your environment.
- Change your environment
Do you find yourself feeling trapped in your current space? Get out and move around! For me it helps to get out in nature. When there isn’t peace in my home or in my heart, I get out and change my environment. It will clear your head and change your reality.
- Control your perspective
There are only a few things in this life that you can control and perhaps the biggest one is your perspective. This is your story. You are the only one who gets to tell it. Which version are you telling? Is there a happy ending? Is it leading to something better or worse. This is your choice.
Start making these small changes and just watch what happens. I believe in you.
It all starts with you.
