Three Steps to Growth
Stop being selfish.
A lot of relationships and friendships fail because people become selfish, hiding double standards in their dealings with others. In life, we are given a ton of different choices. Each choice is accompanied by a consequence, and we are all given the agency we need to discern between these sets of choices and consequences.
Treat others as you'd like to be treated. We're all individuals, and it's harder than most people are ready to admit to truly immerse one's self in someone else's trials. Don't be offended when others don't seem to consider your choices and consequences with the same level of enthusiasm that you do. On the flip side of that, you can help build someone else's support system and strengthen your relationship with them by truly valuing and considering their choices. By showing people value, we teach them how to treat us, as well! What goes around comes around, and that's a maxim true in most areas of life.
Own up to your mistakes.
If you've slipped up, confront the fact that you've made a mistake and work toward making sure that mistake never occurs again. If you sweep the mistake under the rug with denial, you gain nothing! If you fail to acknowledge your wrongs, you refuse to learn and you refuse to grow. Next time you make a mistake, and trust me, there will be a next time; I would like to challenge you to own up to it. Next time you slip up, and you will, because we're all human; I want you to learn from it and grow. I want you to look at who your mistake affected and put yourself in their shoes.
Mistakes can become bad habits if we let them.
A lot of bad human qualities, like selfishness and disrespectfulness, are the result of initial pride. Pride keeps people from admitting a mistake, and instead strengthens their resolve in making that mistake over and over again. Pride turns mistakes into bad habits that can sometimes persist for years or even whole lifetimes.
If everyone on earth could learn to overcome their pride, the world would be a much better place.
Show respect to people no matter what situation you're in. There's no excuse! I don't care if they're strangers. I don't care about what level of life you're in. I don't care about status or skin color, because we're all human in the end. We can all help change the world for the better by leading through example. Next time you interact with another human being, swallow your pride and show some respect. Remember, we're all teaching each other. Own up to your mistakes, swallow your pride, and respect others.
It all starts with you.
