Don’t let the things outside of you control the things inside of you. Your outside circumstances don’t have to be your inside circumstances. Life is hard and sometimes you will find yourself at the end of your rope in your job, or your relationship. When you are low, remember that these things do not define your worth. You do.
When you live your life through outside sources, that is a dangerous place to be. When I was in the NFL, I relied on football to define my self worth. I relied on my status and ability to be what gave me worth. But those things didn't last and when they disappeared for me, I lost my sense of self worth with them. I lost myself.
For some of us, it’s our relationships. For some, it’s our job, or our bank account, our friends or our looks. These are just puppet masters that control how you think about yourself. If you live your life and base your worth off of these things, you will always be a slave to the world. I’m just being real with you. What is your happiness connected to? If you lost it, would you lose your worth too? Ask yourself if the outside sources are the things that keep you holding onto your perception of yourself. If so, it might be time for a change.
My inner peace increases when I disconnect my identity from the things in this world. My life has value, not because of the valuable things in my life but because God gave me life. I had to cut the strings of the puppet masters, I had to cut the strings that were pulling me in different directions.
Don’t let your environment change you, you must change your environment. I want you to take a moment today to write down all the things that are puppet masters in your life. Write down everything that has a say in your self worth and then ask yourself “is this an inside source or an outside source?” Dig deep. Dig past the things that you define as yourself all the way down to your core. Your soul. Your soul has worth regardless of the world around you. Remember this. Fight for your peace, protect your peace. Watch carefully for puppet masters and make time to cut the strings. It’s rehab time.
It all starts with you.
