The number one problem that I see when people are struggling with their self worth is that they will allow the external parts of their life to define them. That’s dangerous. When you let something outside of yourself define you, you are letting something that you can’t control, control you. I did this with the NFL. I made it my whole life, my whole sense of worth. I allowed Football to be my measuring stick for who I was and so when I lost football, what do you think happened? I lost myself too.
For some of us it's our relationship. For some it’s our job, or how well we do in school. Maybe for you, it’s your bank account or your talent. It’s everything outside of us. As long as you are dependent on the things in this world that are outside of you, you will continue to be a puppet to the puppet master. You will continue to be pulled in all different directions that the world pulls you. You must not allow this to happen. You have to take control of what your self worth is. It’s not how people see you on social media. It’s not the career that you are in. It’s not the mistakes that you have made. It’s something much deeper than that.
What does happiness depend on for you? Where does your worth live? What is your self esteem connected to? Whatever it is- that person, that job, that title, that dollar amount now owns you. It controls you. You have to fight back against that. You need to recognize that your self worth comes from God. It’s something that nothing on this Earth can touch. Nothing on this planet can devalue, unless you allow it.
Life isn’t always about “becoming,” most of life is about “unbecoming.” It’s time to detach yourself. It’s time to become your thermostat instead of your thermometer. Spend time today writing down the things in your life that you are giving power to. Spend time really thinking about what it is that you have allowed to define you. What it is that you have allowed to define every day and every hour. Then I want you to spend time writing down why it is in your best interest to no longer allow those things to define you. Spend time honoring your life with the value that you have innately as a creation of God. Nothing can take that away.
It all starts with you.
